Calvinia is situated in the Hantam Karoo, at the foot of the Hantam Mountains, which is part of the largest province in South Africa, namely the Northern Cape. The original name of the town and the area was "Hantam". This name originated from the Khoi people that lived in the area and named the mountain !Han=ami, with means "the mountain where the red
bulbs grow". Later the people started calling it by the name it is now called - Hantam Mountain.

The Hantam Karoo and Calvinia is best
known for its wild flowers. Every spring the whole area is covered with
a kaleidoscope of wild flowers. This is truly one of natures best
performances each year. The Akkerdam Nature reserve consist mostly of the
Hantam Mountain. You can explore the rustic area by one of the various
hiking trails that the area offers. The Kareeboom route was designed
with senior citizens in mind. The 2km hiking trail takes you along the
Hantam Mountain and takes about a hour to complete. The Sterboom route
takes you along the easterly side of the Hantam Mountain and up to the Plato. This route takes approximately 6 to 7 hours to complete. For the
avid bird watchers the Kareedam serves as an oases for the migrating
birds. Birdwatchers can expect up to 65 different bird species at this
reserve.
