The town’s name was originally Vleermuijsklip, which means bat rock. It was named after a rocky outcrop and overhang just outside the town. This outcrop is now a national monument. The name Vleermuijsklip was later changed to Lutzville. The town was named after John Lutz, an irrigation engineer. The impressive Sishen Saldanha railway bridge just outside Lutzville was constructed across the Olifants River on the R363.
Lutzville is situated between the Atlantic Ocean on the west and the Olifants River inland.
