In 1751 the town Van Rhynsdorp was founded as Trutro (Troe-Troe). This happened after the area became known through expeditions made by Pieter van Meerhoff. The name Troe-Troe was changed to Van Rhijnsdorp in 1881 to honor the Van Rhijns for their contributions made as community and church leaders.

In Van Rhynsdorp three botanical kingdoms converge : Nama Karoo vegetation, Succulents in the Knersvlakte and Cape fynbos in the surrounding mountains. North of Van Rhynsdorp is the Knersvlakte (vast plain covered with succulents and quartz pebbles), to the east you can find the Bokkeveld Mountains, Urions- kraal Valley and the Koebee Mountains. South west of the town is the Olifants River Valley.
The succulent nursery is a must see for visitors as it's the largest of its kind in the world. This nursery also serves as a center for the preservation of these succulents. Following the winter rains the town erupts into a carpet of colorful flowers. The flower seasons usually starts in July and last up August. A definite must see for nature lovers. Van Rhynsdorp is the oldest town in Namaqualand and also one of the oldest in South Africa.
