Lobster
Permit needed. Permits can be obtained from local post offices.
MONDAY, 20 OCTOBER 2003:
The new season for recreational fishing
of West Coast rock lobster will open on
15 November 2003 and will close on 1
February 2004. From 15 November 2003 to
31 December 2003 fishing will be allowed
every day of the week, but from 1
January 2004 to 1 February 2004 fishing
will be restricted to weekends only, the
Minister of Environmental Affairs and
Tourism, Mohammed Valli Moosa, has
announced today.
The shorter recreational
fishing season forms part of the
Department's stock rebuilding strategy
to maintain a successful recovery
process, which had been instituted after
the resource had been depleted as a
result of over fishing during the first
half of the 20th century associated with
changing environmental conditions.
The bag limit is four (4)
lobsters per person per day and the size
restriction is 80 mm carapace length.
Fishing for West Coast rock lobster will
be limited from 8:00 till 16:00 on the
days open for fishing.
No person catching west
coast rock lobster with a recreational
West Coast rock lobster permit may sell
it. Any West Coast rock lobster caught,
collected or transported must be kept in
a whole state.
A maximum of 20 rock
lobsters may be transported per day, on
condition that all the persons who
caught such rock lobster are present in
the vehicle, vessel or aircraft during
transportation, and that such persons
are in possession of recreational rock
lobster permits.
West Coast rock lobster
permits will only be sold to persons
above the age of 12 years.
